GRUNGE REVIVAL

Let’s be honest: Swedish tennis players always made me bored. Borg was fun with his wooden racket and all, but too much “defensive”, ya know what I mean. Edberg? He played forward. But c’mon, too clean, too polite. Söderberg? When he will win a big tournament, I will consider him. Right now: boring.

Tennis Bafra are not boring. And they actually do not play tennis. At least, I think so. Those guys might have the funniest music band Facebook page I saw. And good news: their songs are great too. The perfect “I don’t give a fuck but I play the guitar” tunes. So, Pavement? Mmmmhhh… More “grungy”. I mean they could have been signed by Sub Pop back in the 1990s. It actually makes sense since they formed their band in 1993 but did not release any record – except a tape – until… this year! 17 years of silence – even better than Life before man! – and then an album that will eventually be released in 2011.

Nico, the guitarist of the band, told me they would “tour and play where ever they’re invited”. He added Tennis Bafra “does not give too much thought about detail (…) I guess we do have a different approach than some musicians in that we might choose a version that has some errors in it over a tighter version but with less of a feel to it”. Keep it that way guys! The grunge revival will come from Sweden.

Pour mes compatriotes français

Soyons francs : les joueurs de tennis suédois m’ont toujours ennuyé. Borg était marrant avec sa raquette en bois et compagnie, mais son jeu de fond court, franchement, non merci. Edberg ? Lui montait au filet. Mais teeeeeellement poli et propre sur lui. Söderberg ? Lorsqu’il gagnera un tournoi du grand chelem, on en reparlera. Pour l’instant : ennuyeux.

Les Tennis Bafra ne sont pas ennuyeux. Et ils ne jouent pas au tennis. Enfin, je crois. Ces mecs doivent avoir la page Facebook la plus marrante que j’ai vue pour un groupe de musique. Bonne nouvelle : leur musique cartonne également. Des morceaux façon “je joue de la guitare, mais j’en ai rien à foutre”. Alors, Pavement ? Mmmmhhh… Plutôt “grungy”. J’veux dire Sub Pop aurait pu les signer dans les années 1990. Ce n’est pas absurde, le groupe s’est formé en 1993, mais n’a enregistré aucun album – à part une cassette – jusqu’à… cette année ! 17 ans de silence donc – le record de Life before man est battu ! – et puis cet album dont la sortie est prévu en 2011.

Nico, le guitariste du groupe, m’a indiqué qu’ils “joueraient en live partout où ils seront invités”. Il a ajouté que Tennis Bafra “se fiche pas mal des détails (…) j’imagine que nous avons une approche différentes de certains musiciens : on choisit la version de nos chansons plus en fonction de notre feeling que de sa qualité et peu importe si celle-ci comporte des erreurs”. Gardez donc cette philosophe les mecs ! Le revival grunge viendra de Suède.
