While Wild chance illuminated the debut, Mindreader is the highlight of this aerial night (I actually already put the live video of this song on my previous post about Paintbox). It could be just a good regular pop song, but with this sharp cello, and this stammering beatbox, the song turns quite magical, with an unusual atmosphere. Yes, believe it or not, a cello can change everything in a song.
The rest of the record is probably not as brilliant as Mindreader, but tunes such as the opening track The Night or Underground prove the band is able to write several killer songs. Too bad the production of the record is that clean. I would prefer more dirt. Anyway, since I had the chance to see Linnea playing live with her cello, I would recommend you to see her and her buddies live when they are around. And if Paintbox is not helped by a big label or anything, it is for sure a band to keep an eye on (and an ear).

Wild chance illuminait leur premier album, sur celui-ci c’est Mindreader qui se détache (j’avais déjà publié la vidéo live de ce morceau lors de mon précédent billet sur Paintbox). Il ne pourrait s’agir que d’une simple bonne chanson pop, mais avec ce violoncelle incisif et cette boîte à rythme bégayante, le titre s’envole vers des hauteurs insoupçonnées, un poil magiques et en tout cas peu communes. Oui, croyez-le ou non, mais un violoncelle peut métamorphoser une chanson.
Le reste du disque n’est sans doute pas aussi brillant que ce sommet, mais des morceaux tels que The Night qui ouvre le disque, ou Underground, prouvent que le groupe est capable de pondre plusieurs tueries. C’est juste dommage que la production soit si lisse. J’aurais espéré plus de grain. Malgré tout, pour avoir eu la chance de voir en live Linnea et son violoncelle, je peux vous garantir qu’un concert du groupe est recommandé. Et si Paintbox ne bénéficie pas d’un gros label capable d’assurer sa promotion, il n’en demeure pas moins un groupe à suivre du coin de l’oeil (et de l’oreille).
