BEST OF 2011 – MY TOP 20 FAVOURITE SONGS (11-15)

11, 12, 13, 14, 15

You cannot compare potatoes and mushrooms. Music is not a competition. I know, I know. Also, why making a top 20 list when next week I will change my mind? And yes, obviously, I’m gonna forget super great songs (sorry for the artists). But, hey, it’s fun to make a top 20! So here you go, my favourite Swedish songs of 2011. Actually, I realize most of them are quite unknown.

Today numbers 11 to 15. Tomorrow 6 to 10… stay tuned!

11/ PROMISE AND THE MONSTER – Swim

Promise & the Monster is the best. Her records are more interesting and intriguing than the whole Swedish music scene. But she is an album girl. Not a single one. I mean you should listen to her music more than the regular 3.30 minutes pop length. Otherwise you miss something. Songs such as Swim or her brand new single Sand sound immediately catchy. Half frightening, half childish, Swim is a good exemple of what P & the M is at her best.

12/ AND THEN: HAPPINESS – I’ll try

I might be the biggest fan of And then: happiness in the world. Make no mistake, I do not mean it in the Stephen Kings’ Misery way, nor in the Eminem’s Stan way. It is just I am happy to listen to this quite confidential band that nearly no one else seems to listen to. I’ll try is a very weird song though. It starts like Aerial, then it switches into a Bad Cash Quartet spirit, then it evolves into a even more drunker Bad Cash Quartet. At one point, you think the singer is really terrible, but you eventually realize it is exactely the way this song has to be sung. Well, I guess the band could have written three different songs within this one. They decided to make only one. I actually do not know if the band even still exist. They released an album this year though. You should listen to it.

13/ TERRIBLE FEELINGS – Tied up

The Hives? Division of Laura Lee? The International Noise Conspiracy? What? C’mon! The current best Swedish punk band is not the one they told you about! The time of Terrible Feelings will come. Pretty soon I hope. This combo has got pretty much everything a punk band needs to make me happy. A bunch of energy and some melodies. Tied up is not even their best song. But it is the one I prefer from them this year. A debut album is just heavily needed!

14/ MASQUER – Happiness

Masquer is the only Swedish band which makes me feel proud being born in 1980. And Happiness is my favourite song of their brilliant debut album released this year. Thanks to Kicki’s voice, it manages to sound nostalgic AND energetic. A pop gem.

15/ DINOSAURS ARE STILL ALIVE – I’m still fine

The dirtiest, the better. Maybe Dinosaurs are still alive record their music on tape. Don’t know. No production? Probably. Just the story of a guy who shouts his boredom on the mic. Nearly a caricature, except it makes you want to jump around singing. Or crash your head to the wall. You chose.
