BEST OF 2011 – MY TOP 20 FAVOURITE SONGS (6-10)

6, 7, 8, 9, 10

You cannot compare potatoes and mushrooms. Music is not a competition. I know, I know. Also, why making a top 20 list when next week I will change my mind? And yes, obviously, I’m gonna forget super great songs (sorry for the artists). But, hey, it’s fun to make a top 20! So here you go, my favourite Swedish songs of 2011. Actually, I realize most of them are quite unknown.

Today numbers 6 to 10. This week-end, eventually, 1 to 5… stay tuned!

6/ WE ARE THE STORM – I woke up to the bells

I woke up to the bells is the song I played the most this year before to go to a party. A perfect tensed opener. I still do not understand why We are the storm put it as number 9 on their debut album track list. This is the hit guys! Put it number 1! There is actually pretty much everything you need to get a pop single: great energy, great chorus, great “whoooo whoo whoooo”. The proof that youth does know pain.

7/ DU PACQUE – Erotique Du Pacque

“Erotique Du Pacque” means “viagra” in Swedish. The kind of obsessive sexy song produced exactely as it should. Matilda’s voice at her best. Perfect alliage between electro background noise, rock atmosphere and pop chorus. Probably the best tune of one of my favourite Swedish bands. Sweet and sweaty.

8/ LYKKE LI – I follow rivers

I hate Lykke Li. Yes, I actually cannot stand her. I take her as a megalomaniac diva. I think she should be a little bit more “Swedish” and keeps it more simple. But, well, I admit when she writes songs like I follow rivers, I just shup up. I could mock her tribal influence (to me, everything tribal sounds so cheesy now). But what else? Oh, I give up! This song is just a fucking unstoppable hit. I surrender.

9/ KATHARINA NUTTALL – Play

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

It’s hard to explain, but Katharina Nuttall’s voice gives me the creeps. I truly consider her as one of the top 5 Swedish female artists. What a voice! When Katharina weeps “it’s too laaate”, I wanna hurry. And when she opens the song with “Play me know”, I wanna be a player. The song is sad, but it is also beautiful and one of the few I can play like ten times in a row.

10/ PAINTBOX – Mindreader

Paintbox%20-%20Mindreader

How often did I whistle Mindreader‘s chorus this year? That’s a song which gets into you! Actually, if Paintbox had ten songs like this one, they would be standing at the top of the Swedish pop scene. Well, they do not, but both of their albums hold some hidden gems, some 100% brilliant tunes (remember Wild Chance?). Therefore Linea Olsson’s band deserve more attention. Mesmerizing.
